The pronounced addiction to the social web among many people, especially younger people, impairs sexual functions. This is the result of a study by Rui Miguel Costa from the William James Center for Research at Ispa – Instituto Universitário .

Negative mood with consequences

“There is a growing awareness that social media use can take on the characteristics of an addiction. When this happens, mood can worsen. Given that negative mood is linked to sexual difficulties, I was surprised by the lack of relevant studies examining this phenomenon.”

Rui Miguel Costa

There is only one study in this area on the effects on female sexual functions.

Costa and his team examined data from 946 women and 235 men who assessed their sexual functions and disclosed their smartphone habits. There was also data from 536 women and 194 men, who were also asked to rate their sexual functions and reveal their social media practices. The participants all had heterosexual intercourse in the month before the survey.

Gender differences

According to researchers, excessive use of the social web leads to sexual problems. In women, sexual arousal was lower and they complained more about dryness of the vagina, had difficulty reaching orgasm, were more sexually dissatisfied and even had pain during intercourse.

In men, social media addiction was associated with lower erectile function, lower desire, dissatisfaction with intercourse, general sexual dissatisfaction, and more difficulty achieving orgasm. Costa recommends limiting your use of social media for this reason alone. This is also necessary when social media often evokes negative emotions such as anger, envy, disappointment, loneliness or a feeling of alienation.
