Google's “Sound Notifications” are intended to draw attention to certain sounds

Android smartphones can now inform users with “sound notifications” when they hear certain noises, such as a baby crying or a dog barking. Cell phones draw attention to such sounds with a display notification or a vibration. This should enable deaf people in particular to react more quickly.

Important noises in the household

“If users suffer from hearing loss or are currently wearing headphones, sound notifications make important sounds in the home more accessible. They recognize sounds and send push notifications, cause the screen to flicker or the smartphone to vibrate.

says the Android team. Google developed the feature together with Gallaudet University , which specializes in deaf people.

In addition to babies and dogs, sound notifications also detect smoke and fire alarms. You can also alert users to running water, sirens, door knocks, and landline phones ringing. Users can turn the feature on or off as they wish. You can get sound notifications either automatically on new Pixel phones or by downloading Google's Live Transcribe app, which converts speech to text in real time.

Turn down the sound on headphones

In addition to smartphones, smart watches from the Wear OS series can also use sound notifications. The feature works completely without an internet connection. Google is currently also experimenting with automatically turning down the sound of headphones on Pixel smartphones when certain noises are heard.
