The claim

The social welfare office covers a Ukrainian woman's hairdressing costs of 200 euros.

Our conclusion

There is no evidence from the police of such an incident and, according to the dpa, the police themselves consider this claim to be fictitious.

There is currently a rumor circulating that a Ukrainian woman refused to pay a 200 euro bill in a hairdressing salon and, after repeated requests from the business owner, ended up referring her to the social welfare office. The business owner then called the police. Two police officers who appeared on site are said to have confirmed after consultation or a phone call that the social welfare office would cover the costs.

In a voice message distributed on Telegram, which is now also making the rounds on WhatsApp, you can hear that this incident is said to have occurred in the Erzgebirgskreis in Saxony. During her appointment, the Ukrainian not only had her hair cut and colored, but also had her eyebrows and eyelashes and, on top of that, a facial massage. The Ukrainian also had three coffees served to her.

Next to the audio file there is also this statement: “Sending. Regarding the assumption of costs for hairdressing and beauty visits by Ukrainians at the expense of German taxpayers”

Fact check

No exact location was given in the voice message itself. There is currently no evidence that this incident occurred in the Erzgebirgskreis. There is no evidence from the police either, and according to the dpa, the police believe the story itself is fictitious. Like everywhere in Germany, Ukrainians themselves receive basic security from the job center. However, as the district also confirms, this does not include hairdresser bills.

At the dpa's request, the Chemnitz Police Department asked all four police stations in the Erzgebirgskreis whether such an operation had occurred in the last few days/weeks.

“Such an incident is not known or on record in any of the districts,” said police spokeswoman Jana Ulbricht.
“In consideration of the overall circumstances, we assume that this incident did not occur.”
