The corona pandemic was the first in the world to break out in Wuhuan. But the number of unreported infections could be far higher than the number of cases reported so far.

According to a new study, a large number of cases went undetected during the corona outbreak in the central Chinese metropolis of Wuhan. The study by Chinese scientists, published in the journal Nature, comes to the conclusion that up to 87 percent of infections may have remained under the radar in the first acute phase between January 1st and March 8th.

The researchers came to this conclusion by reconstructing the outbreak in Wuhan using statistical and epidemiological models. Other international studies had previously come to the conclusion that many Sars-CoV-2 infections are not detected, for example because infected people have only weak or no symptoms.

In Wuhan, where the pandemic first broke out worldwide, around 50,000 infections and almost 4,000 deaths were reported. No active carriers of infection have been reported from the central Chinese city for months.

In June, two weeks of mass testing of almost ten million citizens revealed only 300 asymptomatic infections with the Sars-CoV-2 pathogen, the state news agency Xinhua reported. Overall, China has largely brought the pandemic under control. There are hardly any new infections anymore
