Pediatricians are sounding the alarm: children of all ages are increasingly showing symptoms of illness that can be traced back to excessive media consumption.
Around nine out of ten pediatricians attribute obesity and social problems to the use of computers, smartphones and game consoles. At the same time, they see these problems in media consumption on the rise in the last five years. These are the results of the “Growing up Smart?” study by pronova BKK, for which 100 pediatricians were surveyed.
79 percent of the doctors surveyed report that they have noticed increased social problems in their young patients over the past five years. 75 percent are experiencing an increase in obesity among children. 56 percent diagnose increased motor deficits, 59 percent learning development disorders. Even with these diagnoses, eight out of ten pediatricians speak of a connection with increased media use.
The President of the Professional Association of Pediatricians and Adolescents, Thomas Fischbach, also warns that even small children use smartphones and tablets. This has catastrophic consequences for child development, Fischbach recently told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”. His demand: “No cell phones before eleven years!”
Pediatricians observe social isolation
According to the study, almost all pediatricians surveyed are “very critical” of the fact that children are spending more and more time in front of the screen. 90 percent of pediatricians warn of the consequences: The extent of the psychological damage caused by increased media use cannot yet be foreseen. 82 percent already notice social isolation in their patients, which they attribute to media use.
