After several months of investigation, on Friday, February 3, 2017, at around 6:20 p.m., a 23-year-old Swiss citizen from the canton of Zurich was arrested by special forces from the Baden-Württemberg police when he tried to purchase a submachine gun.

The arrest took place in the McDonald's restaurant at the Herbolzheim BAB service area.

During a later search by the Zurich Cantonal Police at the perpetrator's home address, two legally purchased firearms and ammunition were found.

The accused was released on Saturday, February 4, 2017 in consultation with the responsible judicial authorities and will now have to answer for the crime.
