Scandal or art? At least these tattooed pigs aren't fake. Belgian artist Wim Delvoye began tattooing pigs as an art form back in 1997.

And these are not dead animals! What we see here on Facebook: A photo shows several tattooed pigs. This photo is not new, but was republished a few days ago. The reproach:

The pigs are tattooed for Wim Delvoye's art. That's also true, there were actually exhibitions with tattooed pigs ( compare ).

About Wim Delvoye

Wim Delvoye began tattooing pigs as an art form in 1997. But because he was violating animal welfare laws in the United States, he emigrated to China to set up an "artist's farm" in Yang Town, Beijing, where he raised his own pigs, tattooed them and sold their skin after slaughter for up to $100,000 .

He also kept many of these skins and regularly organized art exhibitions.

Does he still do that?

No. His exhibitions in Shanghai were banned in 2008. However, he continued tattooing pigs until 2010, before moving on to other bizarre art projects.

And what about the company logos on the pig's skin?
These motifs were not commissioned works: Delvoye actually tattooed logos of fashion labels and other companies such as “Harley Davidson” on the pigskins, which also fetched a high price.

However, he never received an order for this from these companies, which is a fictitious claim. Of course he violated the copyright of these companies, but in China he was difficult for the US justice system to reach. Delvoye now lives back in the USA and no longer tattoos pigs.
