“Your grandson is seriously ill with Corona” – with such a message, fraudsters worry relatives and deprive them of their money.

Fraudsters use a particularly perfidious scam to take money out of the pockets of older people in particular. With shock calls that a relative is seriously ill or has been involved in an accident, they frighten people and appeal to them for help.

You can well imagine that if you received a call like this yourself, all alarm bells would ring and you would want to help immediately if you can. But the alarm bells should ring in a different direction: healthy suspicion is also necessary in such situations in order not to fall for this scam.

Fraudsters are using the corona pandemic for their own purposes

In view of several current cases, the police are once again warning about phone scammers. On Monday, June 14, 2021 alone, 27 shock calls were reported in the Rostock police headquarters area, in which the callers pretended to be hospital employees.

The fraudsters explained that the grandchild or another family member was in the hospital and was seriously ill with Corona (COVID-19). For the necessary treatment, a special medication is now required, which must be imported from abroad. Claims of up to 30,000 euros are no exception.

Your grandchild doesn't need money for an expensive medication from abroad or for an emergency operation!

Shock calls

Such shock calls or attempts to trick grandchildren are currently not isolated cases in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. In the first four months of 2021, 958 attempted frauds and 90 completions to the detriment of older people were recorded. Of these, 685 cases fall within the scope of the Rostock police headquarters.

The damage that has occurred already amounts to around 682 thousand euros in the area of the presidium and almost 1.5 million euros in the entire state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Police warn of fraudsters

Against this background, the police are once again warning against various scams and advise you to inform the police immediately of such calls and not to give anyone information about your financial situation over the phone or to hand money to strangers.

Through a lot of moral courage, attentive taxi drivers or employees of savings banks or banks have been able to thwart numerous money handovers at the last second in recent weeks.

Nevertheless, our appeal continues to be addressed to all citizens: Since fraudsters are always coming up with new stories to get your money, always be attentive and ask questions that only your relatives can answer.
If you are confronted with demands for money, hang up, call your relatives and ask. If in doubt, always inform the police!
