On Monday, telephone fraudsters demanded an extraordinarily large sum of money, amounting to 280,000 euros, from an 84-year-old woman from Parchim.
Telephone trick: traffic accident scam
Using the so-called traffic accident scam, the perpetrators acted as fake police officers on the phone and tried to swindle an alleged deposit. Initially, an unknown woman called the victim, posing as her biological sister and describing a self-inflicted traffic accident in which another driver lost her life and she was therefore arrested by the police. Shortly afterwards there was a second phone call with a fake police officer who demanded an incredibly large sum of money for an alleged bail.
When the elderly woman announced that she could not afford the deposit of this amount, the fake police officer specifically asked about the victim's financial situation. The 84-year-old then ended the phone call.
The police advise
In view of the incident, the police are once again warning against such scams and advise people to end such dubious calls immediately and not to hand over cash to strangers or transfer money to other people's accounts. You can be sure whether it is a telephone trick by calling the biological family members back immediately using the known phone numbers. This way the dizziness can be cleared up quickly. In addition, information about financial circumstances should never be given over the telephone. The police generally do not inquire about this and never ask for bail.
