Telephone scammers demand Google Play vouchers
However, a fee of 1,000 euros in the form of Google Play vouchers would still have to be paid to the security company that delivers the suitcase of money. The man from Pirmasens transmitted the voucher details on January 31st.
“Hello Mom” scam
A 67-year-old woman from Pirmasens, as is obviously and unfortunately still the case with many people, was not yet aware of the WhatsApp scam, “Daughter/son has a new cell phone number and urgently needs a larger sum of money,” which is why she sent over 3,000 euros transferred the unknown IBAN that the telephone fraudsters provided.
Since the “real” daughter then called by chance with her “old” number, the fraud was detected. The bank will now attempt to reverse the transfer.
Fortunately, several further attempts by telephone fraudsters throughout the service area with different variants, which should all be known by now, failed.
Here are the most common variants:
- Fake police officers fake a relative's accident and want bail,
- fake doctor urgently needs money for medicine from a neighboring country to save the life of a close relative,
- Burglars are active in the neighborhood and you should hand over the valuables and cash to a “police officer” in plain clothes at the front door for “safekeeping”.
- WhatsApp messages or an SMS from the supposed child who has a “new” cell phone number and urgently wants a large sum of money transferred,
- Promises of winnings, but a “fee” is due before payment is made.
The police ask again and again that this topic should be discussed with older relatives and friends in order to make it as difficult as possible for the fraudsters.
As long as these unspeakable schemes are successful, the fraudsters will remain active. But it's not just about preventing financial loss.
The psychological suffering of the victims is usually even more severe. So talk to your parents, grandparents, relatives and friends!
