On Thursday, telephone scammers were again active with shock calls in the Konstanz area and the surrounding area. The perpetrators call mostly older citizens and tell the usual stories that a child of the person called urgently needs money because he or she has caused a bad accident and now has to pay a deposit.

In one case yesterday, the telephone fraudsters once again convinced an older woman with the well-known story of handing over several thousand euros in cash to an unknown collector.

The police advise people to respond to shock calls:

The police once again urgently warn against alleged “police officers” who question their victims over the telephone or even trick them into handing over money and valuables. The “real police” never ask for a deposit or accept money or other valuables, especially not at the front door.

In the case of so-called “shock calls”, the police strongly advise you to hang up and contact your son, daughter, grandson or niece directly using the known number. If these cannot be achieved immediately, you should not allow yourself to be put under pressure and, if necessary, first seek advice from friends or the police.

Write down the telephone number of your local police station or police station near the telephone (if possible now!) - if you get a call from a police officer, hang up and first call your police station or station using the number you wrote down.

If you have convinced the fraudsters to collect cash and valuables from a bank, take the bank employees' advice that it could be a fraud seriously and question the situation - even if you are worried about your loved ones!

How to protect yourself

The best way to avoid a call from a telephone scammer is to delete the telephone book entry, as the scammers are usually on the lookout for first names that are supposedly assigned to older people. If you don't want that entirely, you can at least make it more difficult for uninvited callers to select their supposed victims by changing the phone book entry: If you have your first name abbreviated in the phone book (just E. Müller instead of Elfriede Müller) or leave it out completely, it won't work make it difficult for fraudsters to track you down. You can download the required form using the following link: HERE

You can find an information sheet on how to deal with and respond to calls from “fake police officers” and shock calls on the Internet at polizei-beratung.de .

If you are unable to download or print the documents yourself, ask family members, friends or neighbors for help - or contact your local police station!

Raise awareness, especially among older people in your environment, about this scam!
