Swipe left, swipe right – online dating has changed a lot with the introduction of Tinder. In September 2012, the dating app came onto the market and online dating became mobile dating. Tinder has revolutionized the way you can meet new people online. Currently, a third of Internet users aged 16 and over in Germany are looking for a partner online. That corresponds to around 20 million people.

5 facts about Tinder

  • The smartphone is the gateway to the dating world: 84 percent of those who flirt and date online use their smartphone to do so. Among younger people between the ages of 16 and 29, the figure is even 93 percent. Most people who flirt online have a profile on dating apps: 7 out of 10 (69 percent) swipe left and right on typical dating apps like Tinder, Lovoo or Bumble. About the same number (68 percent) are on online dating sites or dating agencies such as Parship, ElitePartner or eDarling. 50 percent flirt on social networks.
  • Online dating is not just for younger people: all ages are on the online dating market. 34 percent of 16 to 29 year olds, 39 percent of 30 to 49 year olds and 33 percent of 50 to 64 year old internet users are looking for partnerships or encounters online. Among seniors aged 65 and over who use the Internet, the figure is still 16 percent. However, three quarters of them (75 percent) often consider online dating to be superficial - significantly more than in the other age groups.
  • It's hardly about one-night stands - supposedly: Dating apps like Tinder in particular are often accused of promoting an unpleasant flirt culture and infidelities. Many people there are primarily looking for quick sex; long-term relationships are difficult to find, goes the cliché. But is that true? In a Bitkom survey at the beginning of 2022, only 6 percent of users of online dating services said that they were primarily interested in one-night stands. 71 percent, on the other hand, are primarily looking for a committed relationship. A quarter (25 percent) are also looking for casual flirts or occasional dates.
  • Yes, true love does exist: online dating is often actually promising. 39 percent met their true love online. Relationships and long-term partnerships occur much more often, even if it is not the love of life: 61 percent have already found a permanent partner in this way, and for a good half the relationship was still current at the time of the survey at the beginning of 2022.
  • Be careful, fake! But it's not all rosy - many users of online dating know this from painful experience. 56 percent have already fallen for a fake profile. Women (61 percent) are affected more often than men (51 percent). Almost half (48 percent) have already had a date with a person who was completely different than what was shown in their online profile.

Tinder has changed the online world

“Tinder hasn’t just changed dating. When you swipe left and right, Tinder has set technical standards that can now be found in numerous applications, from email programs to playlists for music streaming. And dating apps are now also involved in politics. The apps offer one of the few remaining opportunities to bring authentic images of the destruction in Ukraine to Russia.”
