The fog surrounding Twitter's payment models continues to clear. The short message service, which is going through troubled times after being taken over by Elon Musk, has just published that Twitter Blue subscribers can now send tweets with up to 4,000 characters. This regulation initially only applies to the USA, but is likely to soon spread to Europe.

Twitter Blue – Blue tick in the paid subscription

After one of Twitter's main features was the shortness of tweets, initially limited to 140 and then 280 characters, the company is now creating plenty of space. However, only subscribers with the blue tick, Twitter Blue, are allowed to benefit from this.

As the company announced on Wednesday, tweets with a length of up to 4,000 characters are now possible in the USA. As a reason, Twitter Blue writes that although they love good, long comment threads, some users sometimes want to post everything at once.

Most of the standard Tweet features remain. Pictures can be posted, hashtags can be used, or a survey can be initiated. Instead of having to distribute more complex content across multiple tweets, everything now fits into a single one. As long as it is no longer than 4,000 characters. The only restriction at the moment: Tweets longer than 280 characters cannot be saved as drafts or scheduled for later sending.

Longer answers and quotes

Twitter Blue's 4,000-character privilege is not just limited to tweets, but also applies to replies and quotes. These can also be 4,000 characters long. The principle of the visible part of 280 characters including the drop-down menu also applies here.

Another Twitter Blue feature: Long videos

Another privilege of Twitter Blue subscribers is the ability to upload longer videos. If the time limit for free accounts without a tick is a video length of 4 minutes, accounts with a blue tick can upload a total of 60 minutes of moving images.

Readability of long Twitter Blue tweets

Here Twitter is returning to its old strengths. Knowing that the typical user is used to the manageable format of 280 characters and doesn't like to scroll through a post for a long time unless necessary, the new long tweets will continue to be limited to 280 characters in the timeline. At the end there is a request to “Show more”. If you click on this link, the entire article will open. The trick in the future will be to formulate the 280 characters visible in the timelines so clearly that users get stuck on them and make the effort to open and read the entire tweet. Simply skimming through content will then be a thing of the past.

Low-advertising or even ad-free subscription plans

If you follow the online platform Techcrunch, there will be Twitter Blue subscription plans in the future that halve or even completely suppress advertising.

Influencer-friendly

Elon Musk is doing everything he can to make Twitter suitable for influencers. All measures related to Twitter Blue contribute to a platform on which influencers can also be happy without having to completely change their image and text formats. The approach of sharing revenue from advertising that appears in comment threads with the content creators because they provide a suitable advertising environment also supports this strategic direction.
