After an exceptionally serious data leak, parts of Twitter's source code were openly visible on the Internet. Twitter is now requesting information about the person or people allegedly responsible for the publication, according to court documents from the weekend. The short message service Github has also asked to release data on all users who may have seen or downloaded the computer code there.

Twitter initiates internal investigation: The company is concerned about undetected vulnerabilities in the program code following a data leak

As the “ New York Times ” reported on Monday night, citing unnamed sources, the company has launched an internal investigation. One concern is that the program code may still have undiscovered vulnerabilities that attackers could exploit to access data or sabotage the platform.

The New York Times also informs that Twitter managers only recently found out about the leak. This suggests that the software code may have been online on Github for a good two months. According to the platform's data, the account that Twitter said published the data had only uploaded something once - on January 3rd.

Elon Musk announces release of algorithm

It is currently unclear how extensive the code leak is, as these basic program codes are usually well-protected secrets of an online platform. Twitter has asserted copyright claims to have the data removed from the network. At the same time, the company's owner, Elon Musk, plans to make public the algorithm at the end of March, which selects tweets for users when they are sorted by software and not displayed in chronological order.

According to the New York Times, it is believed that the person or people responsible for the leak is someone who worked at Twitter until last year. Around half of the approximately 7,000 employees were laid off after Elon Musk took over the company in October 2022. The purchase price was around $44 billion.
