It's been a running gag for years and a constant annoyance: you type out an original tweet, send it, get the first likes & retweets, but then you see an annoying spelling mistake (damn autocorrect!).
What to do? Delete the tweet, rewrite it again and lose all likes and retweets? Or constantly see the spelling mistake and get annoyed? But this torture should finally be over, because Twitter actually confirmed the supposed April Fool's joke: There will be an edit button!
Initial distrust
Of course, no one really took it seriously when Twitter dryly announced that there would be an edit button:
The response was accordingly:

Twitter itself repeatedly refused to integrate an edit button; users should simply learn to forgive themselves for their spelling mistakes:
First tests of the edit button on Twitter Blue
Twitter Blue is a paid version of Twitter that offers extended functions, for example you can send a tweet a few seconds later: If you notice an error after sending, Twitter Blue users can still send the tweet to be quickly withdrawn and improved before it is actually published.
Twitter's communications team dropped the bombshell on April 5th:
an edit button has been in the works since 2021, and the function will first be tested on Twitter Blue in the next few months.
In a GIF show the button how it will probably look on the smartphone:
Jay Sullivan, the company's VP of consumer product, said in a thread on Tuesday that editing is "the most requested Twitter feature in many years." The company has been studying how to set up the feature “in a safe manner” since last year.
“Without time limits, controls and transparency about what has been edited, edits could be abused to alter the record of public discussion. Protecting the integrity of this public conversation is our top priority as we undertake this work.”

That's why it will take some time until the edit button is available to everyone. In the meantime, the function is being tested intensively on Twitter Blue and improvements and suggestions are being actively sought so that the function is not abused and a change in the tweet is transparently visible to everyone.
Also interesting:
Twitter no longer wants to show Russian government accounts in its recommendations.
Vladimir Putin's Twitter account with 1.7 million followers is also said to be affected. Twitter wants to limit the reach of Russian government accounts
