On Monday evening, December 19, 2016, around 10:55 p.m., a serious traffic accident with extensive property damage and a subsequent escape occurred on Berliner Straße in Ratingen-West.

The as yet unknown driver of a silver Mercedes C180 lost control of his car in a right-hand bend immediately behind the intersection of Otto-Hahn-Straße and Berliner Straße.

The Mercedes continued straight over the curb, went onto the grass and ran over a traffic sign. The car then broke through a metal railing and hit a tree. The car bounced off it, rolled over twice, broke through a small wall and then came to a standstill on its wheels.

A witness observed the incident and immediately informed the emergency services. Even before they arrived at the scene of the accident, two males climbed out of the wrecked car and walked away towards the Erich Kästner Comprehensive School. According to the witness, one of the two escapees was bleeding from the neck area.

The woman could describe the two fugitives as follows:

Driver:
  • Approximately 25-30 years old
  • Southern look
  • Black short beard, black hair
  • Was wearing a black jacket
Injured passenger:
  • Approximately 25 – 30 years old
  • Western European appearance
  • Light brown to blonde wavy hair
  • Dressed in a black jacket

Based on the evidence at the scene of the accident, the police fear that at least the previously unknown passenger was seriously injured in the accident. An immediate search for the two escapees was unsuccessful. The police have launched further investigations.

Witnesses who can provide information about the whereabouts of the two men or other relevant information are asked to contact the police in Ratingen on 02102/ 9981-6210. According to initial estimates, the total property damage amounts to at least 19,000 euros.
