Beware of fake UPS customs fee emails

The messages with the subject “Action Required: Unpaid Customs Fees Affect Delivery” look deceptively real. They are professionally designed, with a neutral salutation and shockingly convincing wording.

These emails claim that a delivery is delayed due to outstanding customs fees of €2.99. Recipients will be prompted to continue the delivery using a button that says “Continue Delivery.”

The trick with customs fees

But these emails are dangerous traps. What at first glance seems like a harmless request for payment is actually an attempt to steal sensitive data.

The messages contain neither specific information about the affected package nor a package number. Instead, the aim is to trick recipients into clicking on the link and revealing personal information.

Identification features of phishing emails

There are some clear signs that this is a scam. Firstly, the return address does not match the official UPS communication. Second, the link in the email leads to a fake website that has nothing to do with UPS. These indications should always be a warning signal.

How you can protect yourself

We strongly recommend that you be very careful when receiving such emails.

  • Do not open links or provide any personal information.
  • Ignore the message and it is best to move it directly to the spam folder.
  • If in doubt, contact UPS directly to check the status of your shipment.

Conclusion

It is more important than ever to remain vigilant and protect yourself against such scams. Stay informed about current fraud methods and share your knowledge with friends and family.
