In the last few days, an increasing number of phishing emails have appeared that were sent to Volksbank and VR-Bank customers.

“Warning: New update not activated for your account”

What is striking about this phishing email, which supposedly comes from Volksbank / VR-Bank, is its supposedly serious presentation. Graphic elements, error-free text design and the name of a personal contact person (hidden in the screenshot) contribute to this in the farewell.

Apparently a new update for the “web security system” is available by May 1st. otherwise certain options such as VR application, POS payment by card and Electronic Bank Transfer would be blocked. A button leads to the supposed activation.

If you follow the link in the email, you end up on a fake website. If you enter data here, you are playing it into the hands of the fraudsters. They could misuse the data and thus gain access to the bank account.

Details by which you can recognize the fake:

  • Dubious sender address
  • Impersonal salutation (“Dear Customer”)
  • Request for personal information via email
  • Button/link directly in the email
  • “Threat” that certain services will be blocked if the VR SecureGo app is not updated

Tip: If you are unsure or have doubts, it is best to contact the bank's official offices and move unanswered emails to the spam folder.
