The claim

The claim is circulating on social media that VW will stop producing cars with combustion engines from 2024.

Our conclusion

A single importer in Norway announced that it would no longer import cars with combustion engines from the VW, Audi and Skoda brands into the country from 2024.

From 2035 onwards, only climate-neutral new cars should be registered in the EU.
This makes the claim circulating that VW no longer wants to deliver cars with combustion engines from 2024 onwards seem all the more sensational. However, this is wrong because it is only a single dealer in Norway who decided to do this.

The claim

It started with an article on August 24th , of which many apparently only read the headline, continued with a sharepic that was first posted without further explanation and ended with the pure claim without any source: the claim about VW and the combustion engine -Out of:

  1. One article used the headline “ VW: combustion engines will be phased out by 2024 ,” but also wrote in the introduction to the article: “ But only in Norway, where electric cars are the measure of all things .”
  2. A Facebook page turns the headline into a sharepic, but only adds what it's about more than a week later

The end of combustion engines at VW in Norway

Norway is making quite a push when it comes to phasing out combustion engines: 54 percent of all new cars sold in Norway in 2020 are electric cars, more than 12 percent of the entire fleet is now electric, and the car with the highest sales figures in Norway in 2020 is an electric car – The Audi e-tron.

On August 18, Møller Mobility Group, the Norwegian importer of VW, Audi and Skoda, announced that it would only introduce fully electric vehicles from these brands in Norway from 2024. As VW told the dpa upon request , the proportion of battery-powered VW vehicles in Norway is already 80 percent, so no significant impact on global production is expected.

Conclusion

So there is no such thing as a “radical cut”: a single importer in Norway will only import electric cars from VW. However, VW will “ continue to meet demand for combustion engines for many years to come .”
