How do the fake calls work?

Your phone rings - an Austrian number appears. The person introduces themselves as an Amazon employee. It tells you that there is a problem with your order or account. You will be asked to provide personal information or make payments. In some cases, you will be asked to install remote maintenance software such as TeamViewer so that employees can better help you solve the problem.

The reasons for the call usually sound plausible - especially if you are actually expecting a package from the online provider. Anyway, hang up. It's a scam!

These calls come from a call center abroad. Even if an Austrian number or even “Amazon” appears on your display, it is a scam. The ad was manipulated. This method of deception is called “spoofing”.

Detect fraudulent calls

  • Amazon only calls when you request it.
  • Service employees do not ask for personal information, passwords, banking or payment details.
  • Amazon will never ask you to make a transfer over the phone.
  • Amazon does not ask you to download programs or apps like TeamViewer. The shopping giant would also never access your device with maintenance software.
  • Hang up if you have a strange feeling.

I fell into the trap. What now?

  • If you have approved payments or submitted bank details, you should contact your bank immediately. The employees know what to do.
  • Change passwords if you have submitted them.
  • Remove installed programs. The criminals may also have installed spy software. Then you should reset your device. Here's what you can do if your device has been infected with malware .
  • Report the case to Amazon. Send the trap or your experience report to [email protected] .
  • File a police report.
