On Tuesday, an unknown perpetrator swindled money from two Facebook users from Lennestadt. The unknown fraudster acted in the same criminal manner in both cases. He opened a Facebook account with slightly changed names of the injured parties.

He used original pictures of the victims for the fake account and copied their Facebook profiles into the newly created account.

The copied profile looks deceptively similar to the original.

He then sent friends of the injured parties messages via Facebook, asking them to share their cell phone numbers. Using the cell phone numbers obtained in this fraudulent manner, he then created a Paypal account under the name of the injured party's friends and then, using a pretext, asked them to send him the TAN numbers that Paypal had sent to their cell phones.

The friends fell for the scam and sent the TAN numbers with which the perpetrator could carry out financial transactions for his benefit.

The fraudulent amounts of money appeared on the victims' mobile phone bills.

The police are warning about this Facebook scam, which has been observed several times across the country in the past.

She gives the following tips:

  • Be careful when you receive suspicious messages and friend requests on Facebook. Such requests are particularly noticeable if you are actually already friends with the fake profile. The writing and language can also give you clues that it is a scam.
  • Immediately inform the person concerned about the suspicion of the clone profile!
  • Also report the incident to Facebook!
  • Never give out payment codes or TAN numbers from payment services such as Paypal!
  • If you have fallen victim to such a scam, report it to the police!
