However, behind the supposed competition there are far less harmless intentions. The site, which was only set up on May 27, 2023, is not part of the official SPAR company.

On the Facebook page of the supposed “SPAR fans” you can see a picture with several ducks, for which the status post reads: “So far no one has found the number of ducks in the photo. There are no winners yet, the @‌Spar team is giving away a €250 voucher for the first 500 people. All winners will be contacted directly by the team. The goods can be exchanged at all of our agencies.”

However, this “Spar Fans” competition is a deception

The real goal seems to be to collect personal data from participants. After participating, users will probably be redirected to a competition form via direct message, as is common with such dubious fake competitions on Facebook.

But what then happens to the users’ data?

The suspicion is that this information is then sold on in order to harass those affected with unwanted advertising calls, spam emails and similar unwanted contacts. The lure of a generous voucher only serves to persuade users to reveal their data.

This is another example of the importance of being vigilant on social media. Always check the authenticity of pages and offers before disclosing personal information. Official companies and brands usually have verified accounts, indicated by blue checkmarks next to their name.

Also note that reputable companies typically do not host contests that require you to enter personal information outside of official company channels. If in doubt, contact the company directly to verify the authenticity of the offer. Spar itself has even set up its own “ fraud warnings ” page on its website, which also regularly publishes warnings about fake competitions.
