If you are currently receiving a text message about a package with unpaid shipping costs, you should be careful! This SMS is a scam.

Fraudsters send text messages pretending to be an unspecified shipping service provider. The SMS contains a reference to a package that is now stuck.

Apparently this package cannot be sent further because it is stuck in the distribution center. But this SMS is only the beginning of an expensive scam, because at the end there is a subscription trap.

The message itself reads harmlessly. A link takes you to a website that claims to be the post office. This shows a supposed parcel tracking and shows that parcel shipping is currently stalled.

However, in order to be able to receive the package, you have to release it, so to speak, i.e. transfer the missing shipping costs later. These are supposedly costs of 2 euros.

SMS = subscription trap!

However, on this fake website we are in the middle of a sign-up process for an expensive subscription! This process is not new; we have been able to follow it several times in the last few weeks ( see here ).

Anyone who provides personal information on the website in advance obedience and in good conscience and initially agrees to pay only 2 euros is signing (digitally speaking) a subscription of 69 per month for an online service that is no longer relevant.

These “services” are (what we have already found) a subscription to online yoga courses, a digital spa or a digital fitness center. However, none of this is clear from the text message at the beginning.

Conclusion

This method is not new:

Very few users are likely to be interested in actually paying 69 euros per month in order to be able to use services that are no longer relevant. Not to mention the fact that the SMS did not come from the post office, whose site was recreated for fraudulent purposes and criminals also have the users' complete address and credit card details.
