Ginger and turmeric shots are very trendy. Their strong, orange-yellow color tempts you to grab them. The small, expensive bottles (shots) usually contain between 30 and 100 milliliters of drink.

What's in the ginger shots?

As a rule, the shots consist mainly of apple juice or orange juice. The ginger contents are quite different. “It’s worth taking a look at the list of ingredients and also the nutritional value table if you want to know what’s in it,” says Antje Degner from the MV consumer advice center.

Can the drinks actually protect against colds?

Ginger shots are food and not medicine. There are no scientific studies that prove that ginger actually protects against colds. However, laboratory studies at the Free University of Berlin showed that the pungent substances in ginger and the essential oil can have anti-inflammatory and antiviral effects.

Can you make ginger shots yourself?

With a homemade ginger shot, you have control over the amount of ginger used, the fruit juice content and therefore the sugar content. The inexpensive alternative to store-bought ginger shots: mix crushed ginger, water and a dash of fruit juice.

Conclusion

Expensive ginger shots are not a miracle drink. If you want to know what's in it, look at the list of ingredients. If you like the drinks, you can easily make them yourself for much less and save on packaging waste.
