The Trusted News Initiative is working on implementing a verification system to verify news articles for their authenticity.

Digital watermark as protection against fake news – The most important thing to start with:

“Project Origin” is a verification system that will in future confirm the authenticity and authenticity of messages using a digital watermark.

Spreading fake news

A big issue in the digital age is fake news.
News often appears to come from reputable journalistic sources. However, if you take a closer look, you can see that they are manipulated and that the authors want to give their content credibility by appearing as a well-known news source.

“Project Origin” verification system

“Project Origin” is the name of the Trusted News Initiative (TNI) verification system, which is intended to expose fake news in the future. However, this system approaches the issue from the other side.

A digital watermark should be added to digital content from news producers - if they wish - that confirms the authenticity and authenticity of the message. Even if content is changed subsequently, you can recognize this by the watermark.

Using this verification, readers of a news item can easily see whether the message actually comes from the specified source and has not been manipulated.

Cooperation within the TNI

The US elections are approaching, and fake news should be prevented, especially in such matters.

The members of the TNI want to make each other aware of false information that could influence the integrity of voters or pose a danger to people.

Dissemination necessary

In order to establish the digital watermark as an identification and perception among readers, it must be widely used. It is therefore necessary for many news producers to join in and use the “Project Origin” system for their news.

As soon as the prototype, standards and specifications are fully available, the TNI would like to work to encourage many news producers to participate.

Trusted News Initiative

The TNI has existed since 2019 and was founded to protect users from misinformation caused by fake news, especially regarding political elections.

Members currently include the AFP, BBC, CBC/Radio-Canada, the European Broadcasting Union, Facebook, Financial Times, Google, YouTube, Microsoft, Reuters, Twitter, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times.
