Every year again...

...in the run-up to Christmas the same false reports appear on Facebook that have to do with Christmas or Christmas markets. One of the reasons for this is that Facebook itself regularly draws users' attention to it. This is done through the so-called reminder function: “1 year ago” or “On this day”.

The following false reports are currently doing the rounds.

Hoax 1: The needle in the glove, distributed at Christmas markets

In 2013 we reported for the first time about the supposed warning message, which is intended to unsettle women in particular.
The graphic that is currently being sent via Facebook and WhatsApp and is driving people crazy is an old fake. There are a few things to say about this. Even if the text says otherwise:

  • NO, there is (and never was) a current warning from the police
  • NO, this scam has not been observed anywhere
  • NO, there were no casualties in this regard
  • NO, scopalamine cannot anesthetize an adult human at low doses

Hoax 2: Poisoned envelope with CD in the mailbox “Christmas music with a story”

This hoax first appeared in 2016. In various status posts you can see a brown envelope, which is from the “ person to person” Karlheinz Böhm Ethiopia Aid came from. Apparently it is a CD with songs and statements from the Koran and the CD contains a chemical substance that paralyzes the respiratory tract. Here are a few things to say about it:

  • NO, this CD does not contain any songs or statements from the Koran, but the CD contains classic Christmas songs
  • NO, the police do not know of any cases where the envelope was poisoned
  • NO, no person has ever had to be treated in hospital because of this

False report 3: People spray you with drugged perfume at the Christmas market.

The false report about the perfume is also 4 years old. Apparently people are sprayed with a perfume containing drugs at the Christmas market. The following can be said about it:

  • NO, there was no drug perfume. Not 2013 and not 2017 either. This hoax is very similar to the “needle in the glove” warning.
  • NO, this scam has not been observed anywhere
  • NO, there were no casualties in this regard

Mimikama: Please stop spreading unchecked status posts on Facebook! This careless distribution unsettles and frightens other users.

In 2016, this even went so far that such a fake warning triggered a major police operation! ( You can read it here ).
