Nonmelanoma skin cancer is a disease that affects around 1.6 million Germans. Some get sick without realizing it. Because non-melanoma skin cancer is a skin disease that is not easy to detect. It is very variable and many people do not recognize it themselves. The non-melanoma skin cancer occurs particularly in sun-exposed areas, such as the face, back of the hands, forearms or bald head.

What does the disease look like?

At the beginning, white skin cancer can be recognized by redness or pimple-like inflammation. This is something to watch. The site can develop into a form of non-melanoma skin cancer called squamous cell carcinoma. If the pimple doesn't go away after a long time, you should see a dermatologist.

Squamous cell carcinoma or basal cell carcinoma

Squamous cell carcinoma develops from the squamous epithelial layer of the skin, a part of the epidermis. A lot of sunlight can damage the cells. The dangerous thing is that the cancer can spread and grow deeper.

Recognizing the first signs is therefore particularly important. Precursors, so-called actinic keratoses, can then be treated. The preliminary stage can still be treated with ointment. However, a squamous cell carcinoma must then be excised.

The second and even more common form of non-melanoma skin cancer is called basal cell carcinoma. This form arises at the bottom of the epidermis, in the basal cell layer. Compared to squamous cell carcinoma, it grows slowly and does not actually form metastases. But it's even harder to spot. This form of cancer can look like a black mole or a scar.

The consequence

Staying in the sun for too long causes up to 100,000 damages to the DNA, i.e. the genetic material, and either all of them have to be repaired or the cell dies. However, with more and more solar radiation and with age, the cells' ability to repair often decreases! Defective cells occur. If they continue to multiply, a non-melanoma skin cancer develops. Which keeps growing.
