WhatsApp announces: “It was a very difficult decision for us, but the right one to better enable people to stay in touch with friends, family and those important to them via WhatsApp. If you use one of the affected mobile devices, we recommend that you upgrade to a newer Android, iPhone or Windows Phone before the end of 2016 so that you can continue to use WhatsApp.”

In 2017, WhatsApp will no longer be available for all mobile platforms.

This means the focus is not only on improved security options and additional functions, but also on newer platforms.

In a few weeks, the following cell phone owners will have to do without or upgrade to WhatsApp:

  • BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10*
  • Nokia S40*
  • Nokia Symbian S60*
  • Android 2.1 and Android 2.2
  • Windows Phone 7
  • iPhone 3GS/iOS 6

* WhatsApp is extending support for these platforms until June 30, 2017

According to WhatsApp, these platforms do not offer the functionalities they need to expand the app in the future.

So there are probably two options left:

A NEW Android, iPhone or Windows Phone before the end of 2016

or

Avoid WhatsApp.
