For a few days now, users have been reporting to us that they are receiving dubious messages via WhatsApp.

Do you also receive unwanted messages from people abroad? Are we writing to people from Hong Kong lately that you don't know and have never heard of before? Then you are one of the many people who are currently receiving very dubious WhatsApp messages.

These messages usually consist of a photo that is supposed to show the sender. This photo may not be authentic. There is often an English-language text underneath. This text says that they supposedly wrote to each other over a year ago and that they knew each other.

The sender (because mostly supposedly female) would have had to go to Hong Kong and can now no longer return to Germany. That's why she asks you what the situation in Germany would look like at the moment. Her plan is to return to Germany in August.

The person then points to their new mobile phone number from Hong Kong, which they should use to write to.

We warn you about these WhatsApp messages!

We currently don't know what exactly is behind this news. But we know that a lot of people have received these messages. In this respect, we can clearly say that there is fraud here.

What exactly is intended to be achieved with this news is not yet entirely clear. But that doesn't really matter, since we can say with great certainty that these people are definitely not acquaintances of the recipients of the messages.

The possibilities lurking behind this for fraudsters are quite large: from scams or phishing to ping messages (whether the phone number is active) or subscription traps, everything is possible here. We will therefore continue to monitor what is behind it.
