The news has been making the rounds for a few days that you can now comment on Facebook. We have already received various inquiries as to whether this is a fake or not.

First of all: It's not fake. This function really exists.

But as with all new features that Facebook introduces, this will be unlocked piecemeal. This process, the so-called “roll-out”, may take several months depending on the scope of the new function. In this way, Facebook wants to avoid having over 900 million angry users against it at the same time in the worst case scenario and is therefore only ever converting a small proportion of users or pages so that improvements can be made more easily depending on the problems that arise.

So if you don't see this function on all Facebook pages yet, that's completely normal and wanted.

As already indicated in the previous sentence, this function is limited to Facebook pages, i.e. pages of companies, brands, etc. It is not known whether this function will also be available for comments on private profiles at some point. The pattern by which the pages on which the function is activated is selected is also not clear.

Pages where the function is already active include:

However, you can only benefit from the new comment function for newly written posts or postings that are not older than a few days. Comments on comments are only possible on one level, at least at the moment. So you can't comment on a comment again.

Advantages and disadvantages

With the new comment options, Facebook now offers more flexibility and overview, which certainly has advantages: For example, if a post is commented on very diligently, there may be a number of other comments between a comment that refers to another comment, which can sometimes seem a bit confusing can. The new comment function makes it easier to keep track of things.

Time will tell how the function works in practice. In addition to the obvious advantages such as clarity, there are also disadvantages - but these are more for the site operators: They now have to or can follow many more individual conversation threads, which means more effort, and page management systems are also often used by site operators. Tools will definitely need some time before they support this feature.

But this function is certainly a useful invention for normal Facebook users. A similar comment function already exists in other social networks or portals, such as YouTube, where it is also used extensively.
