Four new setting variants are designed to make use easier on Android and iOS

Google subsidiary YouTube has made changes to its Android and iOS apps to make it easier for users to choose the resolution of their videos. Four options are available in the Video Quality menu: Auto, Higher Image Quality, Data Saver and Advanced. Until now, YouTube only showed a list of possible resolutions for video playback and an auto option.

Data intensity instead of detail resolution

Instead of being able to choose between 720p, 1080p or 4K resolution for the streaming quality of the videos, users now have these four new options to choose from, which are intended to be more user-friendly for the less technically savvy. This means they can quickly see how data-intensive their streaming is and that higher image quality requires more data and data saving mode results in poorer quality.

India Today criticizes that the new video quality controls make it more confusing for mobile users to choose which option to use. Especially if they don't care about how much data they consume since they can't choose an exact specification of resolution for streaming. The new settings are activated via a server-side switch. Updating the app to the latest version is therefore no guarantee that users will receive the new options right now, it is said.
