Osnabrück - Customs warns of a current fraud scam in which buyers of a vehicle are asked to pay amounts of money by bank transfer using fake letters from the Osnabrück main customs office.

The alleged sellers based abroad offer cars for sale on portals on the Internet. When the contract is concluded, the buyer is informed that the vehicle is in Denmark and efforts are being made to transport it to the buyer. A transport company then contacts the buyer and sends him a transport contract.

This defined that half of the purchase price was to be paid in advance and the remaining amount was due upon receipt of the vehicle. Following the transfer, the person concerned received a letter stating that the transporter with the purchased vehicle was stopped by the Osnabrück customs office and that the journey could only be continued after payment of the remaining amount.

Attached to the message was an alleged document from the Osnabrück main customs office with the German customs logo.

“These letters are of course not from the Osnabrück main customs office. We recommend that anyone who receives such a letter contact the police or the local customs office."

explained Christian Heyer, press spokesman for the main customs office in Osnabrück.
