What is this all about?

At the end of January 2016, US student Lauren M. was found dead in her Vienna apartment.

The scenario could come from a thriller. When the fire brigade breaks down the door, all the lights in the apartment are burned out and there are candles everywhere. The half-naked victim lay on his stomach on the bed, his head covered with a sweater. Traces of blood next to the bed.

Initially, research was carried out in the victim's immediate surroundings until the analysis of the DNA traces led the investigators on the trail of an asylum seeker who was threatened with expulsion.

He had found shelter with the later victim and could no longer be found, which at least puts him very close to being suspected of the crime.

The suspect has now been found in an asylum center in Switzerland.

Swiss authorities were able to track down his cell phone. He is in custody in Switzerland, but refused extradition to Austria at the hearing before the public prosecutor's office in the canton of Thurgau.

However, a corresponding application from the Austrian authorities should be submitted promptly. The “question of crime and guilt” was not clarified at the hearing. It could also be that he refuses extradition because he is threatened with expulsion to Gambia in Austria.

The victim's autopsy revealed suffocation as the cause of death, the exact forensic medical report including toxicological findings is still pending - said Nina Bussek, spokeswoman for the Vienna public prosecutor's office.
