Geopolitical conflicts are leading to an increase in cyberattacks and the increased emergence of “disrupt and destroy” malware.

Education and research remain the most frequently attacked sectors, but attacks on the healthcare sector have increased by 74 percent compared to last year. In EMEA, 33 percent of all organizations were affected by general-purpose malware. According to the report, cyberattacks increased 38 percent in 2022 compared to the previous year, with an average of 1,168 weekly attacks per organization.

Key findings from the 2023 Security Report include:

  • Hacktivism – The lines between state-sponsored cyber operations and hacktivism are becoming increasingly blurred as nation states operate anonymously and with impunity. Non-governmental hacktivist groups are now more organized and effective than ever before.
  • Ransomware extortion – Ransomware operations are becoming increasingly difficult to attribute and track, and existing protection mechanisms that rely on detecting encryption activity may become less effective. The focus will instead be on detecting data deletion and exfiltration.
  • Third-Party Cloud Threat – The number of attacks on cloud-based networks per organization has skyrocketed, with a 48 percent increase in 2022 compared to 2021.

“There is no doubt that the volume of attacks will increase over the next twelve months. Cloud migration has created a larger attack surface for cybercriminals, and the tools we all use will be further manipulated by cybercriminals. To mitigate the risk of cybercrime, CISOs can start by reviewing our 2023 Security Report and ensuring employees receive ongoing cybersecurity training.”
