The claim

A viral video is said to show footage from a wildlife camera in Allentsteig, Lower Austria. You can see a 14-strong wolf pack here.

Our conclusion

The responsible district hunter declares the video to be a fake: It does not come from Allentsteig. It was published by Andrew Hendry on YouTube, among others. The timestamp indicates November 30, 2021 as the recording date. According to its description, it was recorded in British Columbia, Canada.

There is always a lot of excitement when it comes to wolves. Mixed feelings arise among people. Fear mixes with fascination. On the one hand, for example, there are livestock farmers who are afraid for their herd animals. On the other hand, there are animal rights activists who welcome it when wolves gradually reclaim their territories.

Now a 14-strong wolf pack is said to be on the move in Allentsteig in Lower Austria. Footage from a wildlife camera shows how the stately animals make their way through the winter forest one after the other, as if strung on a pearl necklace.

The video is fake, reports NÖN . After inquiring with the responsible commander of the Austrian Army's military training area in Allentsteig, Colonel Herbert Gaugusch, and with district hunter master Manfred Jäger, the NÖN received the information: "Wherever this video was recorded, it certainly did not come from Allentsteig."

It has long been known that there are wolves in Allentsteig. The first pack settled here in 2016, as the Kurier reports.

Where do the recordings come from then?

The same video can be found on Reddit, posted on December 13, 2022 , with the information that the footage of the wolf pack came from Turkey. However, there is no further information about this, the video is a dead end.

Using the reverse image search, we finally get to an Instagram post that also shows that video and thankfully links to the author: Andrew Hendry , Professor of Eco-Evolutionary Dynamics at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. (Thanks, Mia!)

In the video description on YouTube, Hendry explains: “Over two years ago we saw a one-eyed wolf that was at the top of the dominance hierarchy. Here is a video showing some of his adventures. (He's not always easy to spot - but he's always there.)"

In this video compilation you can find the excerpt from minute 1:19, which is now being shared as “Video from Allentsteig”.
The timestamp here indicates the recording time as November 30th, 2021. So the video is not current. Hendry also listed “britishcolumbia” in the video’s hashtags. So the video comes from Canada. – Far away from Allentsteig, far away from Lower Austria, far away from Europe.

This is also consistent with the district hunter's statement that wolves like those seen in the video do not occur in Austria.

Conclusion

Rating: FALSE

The video does not come from Lower Austria, Allentsteig.

posted Instagram and TikTok , among others

Now it is being shared - but with the false information that the wolf pack is in Turkey or Lower Austria. The latter report is now going viral, but it is simply not correct.
