Consumer advice center warns of false payment requests

Brandenburg consumers are currently receiving multi-page, professional-looking warnings about alleged copyright infringements, sent by the alleged law firm Duvenhoff, Lombardi & Cie. The senders apparently hope that the consumers addressed will pay an amount of more than 700 euros out of shame. The Brandenburg Consumer Center (VZB) advises those affected not to react and not to pay under any circumstances.

Some consumers in Brandenburg have recently received mail from the law firm Duvenhoff, Lombardi & Cie, allegedly sent on behalf of the company MG Premium Ltd. from Cyprus. Those affected are accused of having publicly offered a porn film for download. The transfer should be made to Ireland. The IBAN for the transfer begins with the abbreviation IE. According to the letters available to the VZB, the amount is a whopping 747.60 euros.

“These warnings are fictitious. According to our research, the law firm that writes to consumers does not exist at the specified Berlin address. Those affected should not allow themselves to be put under pressure by the letter and should under no circumstances pay.”

Stefanie Kahnert, lawyer at VZB

Another indication that the letter is fraudulent is the request to transfer money to a foreign account.

“Foreign bank details can be recognized by the fact that the IBAN does not begin with the letters DE for Germany.”

Stefanie Kahnert, lawyer at VZB.

But be careful: Not every warning about copyright infringement is fictitious

“In principle, consumers should react immediately and get legal support if a warning comes their way.”

explains Stefanie Kahnert, lawyer at VZB.
