• Attention: Alcohol in Advent calendars with children's motifs
  • This is how empty calendars are disposed of correctly
  • Save money and packaging waste: simply fill the Advent calendar yourself

Every year comes the time for Advent calendars

What's behind the doors - toys, chocolate or suddenly chocolates with alcohol? These can also be bought for children faster than expected. “The childish motifs on Advent calendars with Santa Claus, elves and the like do not give the impression that these calendars are only suitable for adults,” complains Annabel Dierks, nutrition expert at the Bremen Consumer Center.

Those interested will only find information about the alcohol contained on the back.

“Always read the list of ingredients to avoid unpleasant surprises,” advises Annabel Dierks. Some spirits such as brandy, whiskey, cognac and liqueurs are available there. But ingredients such as kirsch, Marc de Champagne or alcohol also indicate the high-proof content. However, a magnifying glass is often necessary to read the small print list of ingredients.

Some manufacturers mark the calendars without alcohol filling with information such as “without alcohol”. “In our opinion, labeling the calendars with alcohol is more suitable - because very few people accidentally buy an alcohol-free calendar ,” says Annabel Dierks. In addition, not all calendars without such a label contain alcohol. “A uniform label with the note “with alcohol” on the front of the Advent calendar foil is therefore desirable,” continues Annabel Dierks.

Dispose of calendars correctly

In no time the calendar is emptied and Christmas has arrived. But where to put the bulky part? Simply throwing it in the trash can or yellow bag is not the best way. The calendars are often made of different materials such as cardboard and plastic. “It is ideal to separate the printed cardboard from the plastic interior. The cardboard can then go into the waste paper, the plastic into the yellow bag,” explains Annabel Dierks. Products that advertise complete cardboard packaging should still be taken apart and disposed of in the paper bin to save space.

SAVE TIP
Advent calendars that you can fill yourself are usually cheaper. The cloth bags or boxes can be reused every year. The content can be freely chosen depending on your taste. “The price per kilogram of sweets in normal packaging is usually significantly cheaper than the contents of finished Advent calendars,” reports Annabel Dierks.
