A young woman on Rügen who was looking for a job through an advertisement wanted to become an “app tester”. In the end she was left with damages of around 35,000 euros.

The “app tester” scam

The 19-year-old victim had posted an advertisement online on a platform in which she was looking for a job. In fact, she received a telephone offer to become a so-called “app tester”. What sounded tempting ultimately turned out to be criminal.

The injured party opened an account at a bank as agreed and handed over the access data to the supposed employer. In the weeks that followed, she initially received her wages, but later no longer received them and she also discovered that there were countless strange account transactions, both credits and debits. She also received bills that she did not incur. At the same time, she no longer had access to the account and could no longer reach anyone responsible, so she decided to file a complaint. The total damage caused is estimated at around 35,000 euros.

Don't re-stitch

This scam has been around online for quite some time. Criminals promise an above-average salary for testing apps. Ultimately, the perpetrators want to get the data of the injured parties. The accounts then opened are used, for example, to order drugs on the Darknet or for money laundering. In some circumstances you may even be making yourself liable to prosecution.

The police advise

The police advise job seekers to check the seriousness of a company in question. Fraudsters can also often be recognized by spelling and grammatical errors in the advertisements. Mere contact via messenger services can also be a sign of dubious offers. The alarm bells should also ring if salary offers are above average. Personal data, especially with regard to ID cards and accounts, should not be easily disclosed on the internet or messenger. If in doubt, ask the local police again, especially if you have already fallen victim to such a scam.
