The claim

A baby was born with an IUD in his hand. Users doubt this story because, on the one hand, prevention was used and, on the other hand, the photos appear rather staged.

Our conclusion

In two well-known cases in which photos of babies with a spiral in their hand are circulating on the Internet, they probably only reached for it after birth.

The star recently posted on his Facebook page reporting on a birth in which a baby was born with the coil in his hand.

We then received inquiries from users as to whether that was actually the case.
The Stern notes that this is an article “from the archive” and is therefore not current. The article behind the Facebook post is from July 2020 .

Vietnamese baby

Here we find out that it was a birth in Haiphong, Vietnam. On June 30, 2020, a small, healthy boy was born here. There are already two children in the family into which he was born. A third child was not planned. Therefore, the mother had a coil inserted as a contraceptive. But the little one wasn't impressed by this and literally took matters into his own hands.

The hospital documented this unusual story and posted photos on Facebook .

The corresponding translation of the post, which is seasoned with a bit of humor: “The baby is very brave and throws the mother's family planning overboard to join in the “misery” of humanity! Great!"

The star refers to VN Express . Here you can read, among other things, a statement from Tran Viet Phuong, doctor in the maternity ward:

“When the boy was born, the device came out with him and he grabbed it.
After delivery, I thought him holding the device was interesting, so I took a picture. I never thought it would receive so much attention." "When the boy was born, the coil came out with him and he grabbed it. After the birth, I found it interesting how he held her in his hand, so I took a photo. I never thought it would get so much attention.”

Tran Viet Phuong

If you take it very seriously, the boy probably didn't have the coil in his hand when he was born. He only reached for it later.

Births despite spirals are rare, but not impossible

In the case of the Vietnamese mother, doctor Tran Viet Phuong explained that the IUD may have been displaced from its original position and was therefore no longer 100 percent effective.

pregnancy occurs despite contraception - even with an IUD . Normally, spirals are then removed as quickly as possible. In some cases, however, this is not possible, so regular examinations are essential due to an increased risk of inflammation.

A birth like this is generally something special. But when the baby picks up the contraceptive, it becomes even more special. As if he was having fun and wanted to show his parents who had the upper hand.

It is almost inevitable that parents or hospital staff document this with photos, as can be seen from the numerous reactions to the Vietnamese hospital's posting.

Not the only case

Little Dexter did the same thing to the boy from Vietnam three years before . He was born on April 27, 2017. He also holds his mother's spiral in his hand.

Here the mother herself writes that the IUD was found behind her placenta. Whether it was given to the boy or not cannot be determined here. However, it is not uncommon for children, even as newborns, to grab and hold on to anything in their surroundings.

Conclusion

The photos are real. The two boys defied contraception with an IUD and were born healthy.

However, the fact that they were born with the spiral in their hand does not seem to be the case here. They didn't reach for it until after birth.

And even if they were actually unplanned, they are certainly welcome in their families, even if their special “appearance” doesn’t give them a very special place.
