A new type of internet fraud has recently been increasingly reported to the Aalen police headquarters.
The fraudsters use the eBay classifieds sales platform to contact their victims. If the alleged fraud victims appear there as sellers and also provide a cell phone number in the contact, the fraudsters establish contact using this cell phone number. The potential victims are then shown to be more interested in buying and are suggested to use the website's “secure payment” function to complete the purchase.

Fake eBay classifieds site

As a result, the criminals send a fake link to their victims, which leads to a page where people are supposed to enter their account details. This looks deceptively similar to the real eBay classifieds page. A supposed live support service operated by the fraudsters guides you through the site and ensures that the relevant security and confirmation queries from the banks are filled out for the benefit of the perpetrators. The aim is to bypass security checks and “phish” victims’ data.

The stolen account details are then used to empty the victim's bank account.

To prevent this, the police advise that purchases and conversations should always be carried out directly via the eBay classifieds website and that potential buyers should not click on links. You should also not include a cell phone number directly in your ad.

In the event of suspicion, remain suspicious and also pay attention to the relevant security warnings and queries from your bank.
