Only every second employee knows what to do in the event of an IT security incident, as the study “Cybersecurity in Numbers” by G DATA CyberDefense , Statista and brand eins shows. Accordingly, there is an acute need to catch up with the measures that should be taken in an emergency to mitigate damage.

Size is a relevant factor in cybersecurity

The size of the company plays an important role: around 64 percent of respondents from large companies with over 1,000 employees answered the question as to whether they knew the processes for IT security incidents. In small companies with fewer than 50 employees, not even one in three know what measures to take in the event of an IT security incident.

“The risk of a cyber attack on your own company is now much more likely than a fire breaking out. Companies that have not defined processes, plans and measures for such an emergency are acting negligently.”

Andreas Lüning, co-founder and board member at G DATA CyberDefense

Backups are business critical

Only 53.8 percent of respondents say that the company has a data recovery plan in place. And only 53.4 percent confirm that the data infrastructure is secured. These measures are of existential importance. For example, if you regularly create a backup of your data and keep it separate from the network, you can import this data back into a cleaned system in an emergency and be able to work more quickly.

It is noticeable that little importance is attached to communication. Only 41.8 percent know that there are plans for internal communication. Only 27.6 percent of those surveyed were aware of plans for external information measures. Communication plays a crucial role in anticipating impending reputational damage if cyber criminals publish customer data, it concludes.
