In view of the looming gas supply crisis, 30 percent of all households in Germany are considering purchasing electric heaters such as fan heaters, radiators or space heaters. According to a new survey by the comparison portal Verivox, ten percent of those surveyed have already purchased such a device.

Better think

However, many German consumers apparently do not have a realistic view of electricity costs. Only a good third (35 percent) of those surveyed assume that operating electrical devices is more expensive than conventional gas or oil heating.

Around ten percent of those surveyed have purchased an electric heater such as a fan heater or radiator in the past six months. Another eleven percent are planning to buy an electric heater, and 19 percent have thought about purchasing such a device.

Expensive panic purchases

“Electric direct heating devices cost significantly more than gas heating. This is because the price for a kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity is significantly higher than for a kWh of gas. In August 2022, a kilowatt hour of electricity costs around 42 cents on average nationwide, the average gas price is around 18 cents/kWh.”

Verivox energy expert Thorsten Storck

According to the expert, if one assumes a complete conversion of the heating energy into room heat, i.e. an efficiency of 100 percent, the price of gas would have to more than double in order for the costs to be the same as for electric heating. The purchase of electric heaters should therefore be reconsidered given the costs.
