Doctor appointments with one click

For some time now, more and more doctors and clinics have been offering online appointment scheduling. Often via the service provider Doctolib. You can search for doctors and practices directly in the free app. In order to book appointments, the insurance status and reason for the visit must be provided. According to the company's own information, 13 million Germans use the portal. 25,000 doctors and therapists are already involved - and the trend is rising.

Inadequate data protection at Doctolib?

But how secure is the company’s patient data? The company's data protection has been criticized in the past. In 2021, the company will even receive the Big Brother Award, the negative prize for so-called data octopuses. Doctolib processes data from tens of thousands of patients in disregard of medical confidentiality, criticizes the lawyer and former data protection officer for Schleswig-Holstein Thilo Weichert. Some vulnerabilities have been fixed so far, others not. The software still accesses patient master data such as address, email and current appointments.

Lack of information?

The ENT doctor Tobias Ponert uses the Doctolib system in his practice. Doctolib costs him 139 euros per month. As a young and modern practice, he also wants to appeal to a younger target group. Master data of people who were treated by his predecessor also appears in the patient list. The doctor wasn't aware of that. Doctolib comments on the transfer of patient data without their consent: “Patient consent is not required for patient data to be transferred to the Doctolib appointment management system.”
