Microsoft raises alarm over alleged “hacker warning”

Last Sunday (January 22nd), a person surfing the Internet received an alleged “hacker warning” from Microsoft. After he didn't respond, he received a call the following day from a supposed Microsoft employee.

He claimed that he had to carry out urgent maintenance on the called party's computer in order to rebuild the firewall. The man gave the caller remote access to the computer. Among other things, he arranged for account debits to be released in order to pay the “technician” for his service. However, after a mid-three-digit amount was debited from the 71-year-old's account, he ended the communication and notified his bank.

The police once again urge you to be skeptical about such calls.

Reputable computer companies do not call unsolicited to carry out maintenance, but only call when an order is placed.

That's why the police advise:

  • End the phone call immediately.
  • Never allow unknown callers access to your computer. Fraudsters try to obtain this, for example, by installing remote maintenance software.
  • Do not give out private data such as bank details, TANs or customer account access details.
