Hydraulic balancing is particularly useful if you heat with a heat pump or a condensing boiler. Hydraulic balancing should also be carried out after major thermal insulation measures.

Hydraulic balancing for heating optimization

Hydraulic balancing ensures that the right amount of water can flow through all radiators. The water in the heating system generally seeks the path with the least resistance. This means that water flows through short and thick heating pipes rather than through long and thin heating pipes. This means that rooms that are further away from the boiler may not receive enough heating water. In close rooms with too much water pressure, the thermostatic valve can no longer work properly.

When problems like this arise, the water temperature or pump pressure is often simply increased - but this is not an energy-saving solution, says Cathrin Becker, energy consultant at the consumer advice center. In addition, pump pressure that is too high can cause noise, such as hissing or whistling.

Through hydraulic balancing, all radiators should be supplied evenly with the necessary amount of heating water. For this purpose, the heating requirements of the rooms must first be determined. The expert from the heating company will decide whether the existing radiators are the right size or need to be replaced. In a second step, the amount of water that needs to flow through is calculated for each radiator. Under certain circumstances, only the valves on the radiators are replaced and adjusted to the calculated water quantities.

In addition, as part of the hydraulic balancing, the heating pump is optimally adjusted to the correct pressure and the heating curve.

Hydraulic balancing is particularly useful if you heat with a heat pump or a condensing boiler. Hydraulic balancing should also be carried out after major thermal insulation measures.

There are some special cases

In buildings with underfloor heating, wall heating or mixed forms of heating as well as “single-pipe heating systems”, hydraulic balancing is possible, but is much more complex to carry out.
