The Robert Koch Institute writes on Twitter that the STIKO vaccination recommendation for COVID19 has been updated. Among other things, the recommendation for children between the ages of 5 and 11 without previous illnesses was adjusted. All children aged 5-11 who have not yet been vaccinated without previous illnesses should first receive an mRNA vaccine dose in the sense of basic immunization. This recommendation applies to children with and without a previously proven SARSCoV2 infection.

General vaccination recommendation for 5 – 11 year olds:
Children with one dose of vaccine initially.
After carefully considering all available scientific data, STIKO has updated its COVID-19 vaccination recommendation for children. ▶ Children with previous illnesses should continue to receive a basic immunization with 2 vaccinations and a booster vaccination.
▶ Healthy children should receive a basic immunization with 2 doses of vaccine if there are close contacts in their environment with a high risk of a severe course of COVID-19 who cannot be reliably protected by vaccination themselves.
▶ In addition, STIKO recommends that all other children initially only receive one COVID-19 vaccine dose. This vaccination recommendation is made as a precaution because a renewed increase in SARS-CoV-2 infections is expected next fall or winter. The vaccination of 5 - 11 year old children should preferably be carried out with Comirnaty (10 μg). The use of Spikevax (50 μg) is also possible for 6 - 11 year old children. Since only safety data from the approval is currently available for Spikevax, the STIKO preferentially recommends vaccination with Comirnaty.

Further information from STIKO

The STIKO also recommends initially only one dose of vaccine for healthy children who have not yet been diagnosed with a SARS-CoV-2 infection. For all children, the STIKO will reassess the question of the need to complete the basic immunization or a booster vaccination in late summer or if the number of infections increases again.

For children who have not yet been vaccinated, have previous illnesses that are associated with an increased risk of a severe course, and have not had an infection, the recommendation of 2 vaccinations for basic immunization and 1 booster vaccination still applies. In addition, the STIKO has updated its vaccination recommendation for people who have had a SARSCoV2 infection and have not yet been immunized.

Lots of criticism!

The publication of the STIKO also received a lot of criticism. For example, it is often noted that this recommendation would come far too late. These are international standards that are only now being adopted for Germany. The lack of a booster vaccination is also criticized. In an international comparison ( for example with the USA ) we see that the booster vaccination is already recommended for 5 to 11 year olds.
