The claim

In a video about the state elections in Lower Austria, the incumbent governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner is said to have only addressed people with foreign-sounding names.

Our conclusion

The video has been manipulated. It was deliberately edited together in this form from several videos that were created using the generator on the ÖVP page “We have to talk”.

A video from State Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP) is circulating around the state elections in Lower Austria on January 29th, 2023. It is shared on social media and also finds its way into messenger services such as WhatsApp. In the video, Mikl-Leitner addresses various people by their first name. The video is accompanied by oriental-sounding music.

Video message from Johanna Mikl-Leitner

“Dear Achmed, dear Ali, dear Emre, dear Fatima, dear Furkan, dear Machmud, dear Mehmet, dear Mohammed, dear Okan, dear Ömer, dear Yusuf, it's about our home, about Lower Austria. Let's help together now so that we can continue on our path. Your Johanna Mikl-Leitner”

A quick look at the video is enough to know that at least some editing and splicing was done here. But not everyone is so sure here.

The video was published by an FPÖ politician on Facebook and TikTok. He himself notes here: “PS: it is a compilation: https://wir-muessen-reden.johanna-mikl-leitner.at/

"We need to talk"

Here he also gives information about the origin of the video. On the “We need to talk” page you could create and send a personalized video. You could choose one of 500 names that Mikl-Leitner had spoken in advance for the video creation and send the video on. However, it was only possible to select ONE name per video. You couldn't set background music here either.

So certain names were selected for the compilation, videos were generated from them and then put together. It now appears as if the state governor addressed over ten people in a video. All with first names of foreign origin. But this video doesn't run smoothly, which confirms the compilation.

Conclusion

Mimikama Rating: MISLEADING

The video in which Mikl-Leitner addresses several people at the same time does not come from the ÖVP.

For this purpose, several videos were created, each of which only contains one name, then edited together and accompanied by music.
To do this, the video generator provided by the ÖVP on the “We have to talk” page had to be used. As the AFP writes, the ÖVP Lower Austria describes the video as a fake.
