This is what travelers who are missing luggage after a flight back from vacation should do.

Start baggage tracing

First of all, those affected should contact the baggage tracing counter at the airport immediately after the trip and fill out the so-called Property Irregularity Report. If the counter is closed, this can often be done via the airline's website, or you can stop by in person the next day.

Show baggage delay

The delay of the baggage must also be reported to the airline as quickly as possible. When traveling with multiple airlines, each company should be informed to be on the safe side. Whether an email is sufficient in this case is debatable, so it is advisable to send the notification in writing by registered mail or by fax with a delivery report.

Act quickly and get costs reimbursed

“It is important to take care of missing suitcases and bags quickly,” says Julia Rehberg from the Hamburg Consumer Center.

If the luggage is found again, the airlines usually take it to the traveler's home. If the airline does not provide this service and the suitcase has to be picked up at the airport, consumers can, according to Rehberg, have the travel costs reimbursed. This would also include parking costs.

If a suitcase doesn't show up at all, the maximum compensation is around 1,400 euros per passenger. “Valuable items should therefore be put in hand luggage,” advises Rehberg.
