As the police have now become aware, criminals were apparently up to mischief in the lobby of a bank between Wednesday (October 5, 2022) and Thursday (October 6, 2022) and manipulated several ATMs. According to current findings, the perpetrators prepared the cash distribution shafts with so-called “cash trapping traps”. The damage caused so far is not yet known and is the subject of ongoing investigations.

Withholding cash

The aim of these “traps” is to withhold cash, giving those making withdrawals the impression that the ATM is empty. Once the customer has left the room, the perpetrators usually return and steal the money.

Commissariat 43 in Darmstadt is entrusted with the current case and has initiated an investigation on suspicion of theft. In order to continue the proceedings, the officers are looking for witnesses who have made suspicious observations in this context. All relevant information can be received on 06151/9690.

The police also take the current case as an opportunity and give important tips on how to behave:

  • Report any suspicious changes! A valuable and timely tip for the police can be a report that the machine is presenting an empty output without this being justified in the report. Don't be afraid to contact your local police station immediately or dial 110.
  • When using it in the area of bank service points, pay attention to “conspicuous” devices and changes. Both when accessing the premises and, in particular, when using ATMs.
  • Do not use an ATM if there is something unusual about it, such as attached strips or panels, protruding or loose parts, traces of glue around the card slot.
