The claim

In 1986, Maradona wore a T-shirt that said “No Drugs” and Platini “No Corruption.” Years later, Maradona overdosed and Platini was arrested for corruption.

Our conclusion

This is only partially true. Maradona's jersey shows the inscription “No Drug”. Platini's jersey features the same inscription, but in French: "Drogue No!" The photo also dates from 1988 and was taken at the Marcel Picot Stadium.

The photo, which shows three football legends - Maradona, Platini and Pelé - is currently being shared again and again. – Via social media or as a screenshot via messenger services such as WhatsApp.

The legendary photo

The photo is said to be from 1986, a Facebook post claims:

“In 1986, Maradona wore a T-shirt that said “No Drugs” and Platini “No Corruption.” Years later, Maradona had an overdose and Platini was arrested for corruption,” is the text of this article, in which that same photo is shown again. The term double standards is mentioned in the comments, others describe it as ironic.

You might think that the two soccer stars had scored an own goal with these messages. Because it is no secret that Maradona had problems with drugs ( compare ) and Platini was suspected of corruption and was also briefly in police custody (see here ).

The facts

1986? No. The photo was taken in 1988. As you can read on the French website of the newspaper estrepublicain.fr , a farewell match for Michel Platini took place on May 23, 1988. A number of well-known football greats of the time gathered in Nancy at the Marcel Picot Stadium. The recording also comes from here.

___STEADY_PAYWALL___

On Pelé's death at the end of December 2022, the French site Lorraine actu retrospectively from the photo:

“May 23, 1988 represents a real event in the history of the Marcel Picot Stadium. […] It was a certain Pelé who came to kick off the game. He took the time to pose for a photo with Diego Maradona and Michel Platini, who wore a jersey with the words “No Drug” and “Drogue No.” The photo is remembered as one of the most iconic in football history and was taken in our region.”

There is also a reference to the inscriptions on the jerseys. “No Drug” or “Drogue No”, which means “No Drugs” in English and French. So Maradona actually has “No Drug” written on his jersey, but Platini has no sign of corruption on his jersey. Here is also the same message as Maradona's, only in French "Drogue No" ( see here ).

Conclusion

Rating: FALSE

Peppered with an incorrect time, the information on the photo is only partially correct, as we already exposed in 2019 .

One should probably take the reference to Platini with a bit of humor (because of the suspicion of corruption), but he did not wear a jersey with a message against corruption on it.
